As you work on the requirements for this patch as a family, you will get the opportunity to explore Old Union Cemetery located on Camp Dellwood’s property and explore the lush history the cemetery has to offer. The Camp Dellwood Cemetery Patch Program kit contains everything you need to complete the kit on your own. In addition to the activities in the kit, you will receive a code to reserve a day of hiking at Camp Dellwood to complete the curriculum! This is a great opportunity to get your troop/family outside to enjoy the fresh air and learn about our history, too! (Each Girl Scout/sibling will need her/his own kit to complete the activities)
The Old Union Cemetery was founded by the Old Union Church congregation in 1825. As the years past and the congregation dwindled, the cemetery remained. Now it’s the oldest cemetery still in existence in Marion County. In 1917, the Old Union Cemetery Association was created to ensure the lasting memory of the church and burial ground.
In October 1990, the Old Union Cemetery Association dissolved due to a reduction in its membership. The cemetery property was then given to the Hoosier Capital Girl Scout Council. The cemetery is now going through a restoration to maintain and preserve it because it’s an important part of Dellwood and Indiana history. By restoring it, we are able to keep it as a reminder of the people who are buried there, and the important lessons of diversity and inclusion that prevented others from being buried there.
